Ready, Set, Go Ladies! Tom Ford to Launch Upcoming Womenswear Line

By:| XBubble

tomford

The designer, and now film director, finally acknowledged on the record he’s returning to the women’s arena and confirmed he and his longtime business partner and Tom Ford International chairman Domenico De Sole are on the hunt for financing.

Ford, in town to promote his new film, “A Single Man,” and make a personal appearance at his new men’s shop in the Isetan department store, said he plans to launch the Tom Ford brand’s first women’s collection “very soon,” although he declined to specify a date. Sources told WWD earlier this month that, depending on financing, Ford was eyeing a launch of a women’s line as early as fall 2010.

“Financing is extremely expensive right now, so if we find financing in the right situation we’ll be able to start [a women’s collection] soon. If we don’t, we may have to wait a while,” Gucci’s former creative director told WWD in an interview from a 50th floor suite of the Park Hyatt Hotel with an expansive view of the city skyline.

Recent reports estimate Ford and De Sole are seeking $50 million or more to fund a women’s collection and that Credit Suisse is leading the process. De Sole, who is also in Tokyo, declined to discuss the financials of the privately held company except to state that Ford’s stores in Osaka, Tokyo and Seoul are performing strongly.

“We have the advantage of being a younger brand that’s in a growing mode,” De Sole said.

Ford contended his men’s wear label is outpacing most of its competitors in the recession and he’s optimistic the luxury goods market is on its way to recovery.

“Things are getting better every day in most places,” Ford said, clad in a black suit and a white shirt. “So I’m optimistic and this is something that I plan on doing for the next 30 years of my life, so if I have to wait another six months or a year [to launch women’s], it’s OK.”

Very effeminate women can pull off the masculinity of a men’s suite so graciously. RL mastered this method in many pieces from the collection.

Saturday Style Exclusive: Mikhayel Tesfaye & Digit

1

PM: What are your expectations of a collection, meaning what do you want your audience to take away from it?

MT: Really my expectation is for it to bring enjoyment and excitement whenever the person purchases it. I think that’s really the goal of a designer to have their work pushed out to the masses and accepted.

PM: In what direction do you see the sneaker game going?

MT: I think the biggest thing we will see is that it isn’t just the sneaker game anymore. It’s more like the lifestyle game now, it’s moving into many other categories. Smaller brands that have been around for a few years aren’t the mom & pop shops like they were when we got started. They have moved on and become long time players so now these companies are addressing the global market. So that’s what we hope to do with our new brand called Passport!

PM: So what exactly is Passport?

MT: Passport is a brand that me and my other partner, Digit (who is in charge of our female collection), put together to address the global consumer. Due to the internet there are a lot of people who are more alert to things that are going on all over the world so Passport to us is more of a global approach towards fashion. But I feel that I may be speaking on more of a male perspective so I’m going to pass it over to Digit so she can explain more of what we have for a female audience.

PM: That’s Cool, What’s up Digit!

Digit: Great! How are you?

PM: I’m doing well! So what do you feel Passport is all about?

D: We, on the women’s side, are very similar to what Mikhayel said. We really want to apply a global perspective to our clothing. We want to use a lot of influence from traveling around (and from the past) so that we can take it up a notch and making it classier.

PM: What are some of your favorite materials you like to use in your designs?

MT: I can take this one. I think it’s not really about what the most heavily used materials are but I think it’s our use of materials that really make our design special. I think that’s something we have definitely carried over from the past that we have incorporated in this brand. For example let’s say we make a silhouette of a shoe and create it with a solid color with patent leather, I think that would be great and possibly a classic but to make things dope you have to debate between the color, the shine, the height, etc. I mean we could easily do pastel colors in the spring and wool fabric in the winter but I think we want a blend of possibly both in the fall to be our brand signature.

PM: When can we expect to see the launch of your brand?

MT: We’re anticipating our first drop to be in May 2009.

PM: Dope! Well, that’s it on my side do you have anything you want to add?

MT: Nothing that I can think of at the moment except take a look at our site www.psprtgoods.com and have a great new year.

PM: Thanks!
